Finally, Chennai set to have an Outer Ring Road

CHENNAI: After a good two decades, Chennai is all set to get 62 km-long Outer Ring Road to ease the flow of traffic moving from Southern districts to Andhra Pradesh and beyond. The ORR from Vandalur to Minjur is on the verge of completion and is likely to be opened in the first week of November. The entire stretch will be thrown open to public in November. The development of ORR was taken up as part of the recommendations made in the first master plan for Chennai, to reduce traffic congestion by connecting the National Highways to the city. The Second Master Plan also identified areas along ORR as potential areas to absorb the future growth. The ORR will also be key for the development of Tidel Park-3 in Pattabhiram, spread across 5.57 lakh square feet and generating over 25,000 jobs.

Outer ring road phase II inaugurated

Heavy vehicles can now reach ports in Tiruvallur district without entering city Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday inaugurated phase II of the Chennai Outer Ring Road (CORR) connecting Nemilichery on NH 205 and Minjur on the Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchetty Road built at a cost of 1,075 crore. The 30.50-km stretch of the six-lane road is access-controlled with service roads on either side. With this, heavy vehicles can reach ports in Tiruvallur district without having to enter the city. Similarly, motorists travelling towards Tiruvallur and Andhra Pradesh can use this road to reach the Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road, and those heading towards Bengaluru can do so by exiting at Nazarathpet. Nearly 30,000 vehicles, including 2,100 buses, 5,300 multi-axle vehicles and 2,400 light commercial vehicles, pass through phase I of the project, which runs from Vandalur on the G.S.T. Road (NH 45) to Nemilichery and was inaugurated in August 2014.
